Greetings to all members of the Lasiewski Family! This page is intended to gather and share information about our family and its history. Most of the information presented here was written by Paul Lasiewski and forwarded to me, Erik Lasiewski. I am forever grateful to Paul for opening up this part of my life for me. I hope other members of our family will be equally happy to learn more about who we are, and to share what they may know. If you read anything that doesn’t match with your information, or have details to fill in blank areas, please let me know! I am particularly interested in completing the names (first and middle) and birth and death dates of the people listed here. Any history, recolections, pictures, addresses (e-mail or snail) or other information related to our family is also welcome. I am currently in beginning a Lasiewski search through the Family History Center of the Church of LDS; any steps you’ve taken and would like to share would be great.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Lasiewski:

In the English language there is no letter which corresponds to the Polish L. The letter looks like an English Scrpit L with a slash through it. The Polish letter which looked more like an English L was actually pronounced like an English W. The original spelling with the polish letter was also with a z instead of the first i, Laszewski. It was pronounced Was zef ski or Was shev ski. It appears that the version as we know it today came about at Ellis Island where immigration officers could not understand the imigrant brothers, and they could not understand English. “Lucian Lasiewski” is engraved on the “American Immigrant Wall of Honor” at Ellis Island (Note: I am unable to find the details… Let me know!).

Lucian Lasiewski (Lucyan Laszewski):
Lucian was born in Olita, a small village near Vilnius, on March 5, 1877. Because of the moving boundries of the countries at that time due to power struggles, it is unclear if the area was part of Poland or Lithuania, though it is currently in Lithuania. Lucian had four brothers: Gregory, Johann, Kaziemerz, and one other, name not known possibly Klemenz. Johann committed suicide by jumping off a roof. The history of the other brothers in unknown to us at this time.

Lucian married Jacenta Raczkiewicz who was born in 1879 in a part of Poland which was a German territory. They had six children: Helen (b.1901), Franciszek (b. 1905), Anna (b. 1911) , Constanti (b. 1910), Alfonse (b. 1914), and John (b. 1916). They lived in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Lucian worked for the Lackawana Railroad as a dock builder in Jersey City, NJ. When his wife, Jacenta died of tuberculosis in June of 1924 (age 45), Lucian tried to keep his family together in a four room flat, on the fourth floor at 589 Henderson St. That site is now where the Holland Tunnel is connecting N.J. to N.Y.C. When Lucian remarried to Julia, in 1930, his new wife did not want to take care of all the children. With Helen now married to Leo Lemanski, the younger siblings stayed with her. When Julia died in 1933, Lucian again remarried in 1935. His third wife, Stella died in 1951. Lucian died on November 10, 1965 and is buried with Jacenta and Julia in Holy Cross Cemetery, Arlington, N.J. Block 6, Section G, Tier A. Grave 331.
